Picture of Beijing’s Skyline for a Year

Air quality charts, studies, and even fashion trends prove just how terrible pollution has been in China. Still, for many of its citizens, the issue just doesn’t seem urgent enough. So, to make it plain and simple, one Beijing resident took photos of the same spot in the city’s skyline for 365 days and blogged […]

Amazon.com Widgets

The Great Chinese Exodus

Even when the emperors did their utmost to keep them at home, the Chinese ventured overseas in search of knowledge, fortune and adventure. Manchu Qing rulers thought those who left must be criminals or conspirators and once forced the entire coastal population of southern China to move at least 10 miles inland. But even that […]

Volcano in Iceland

The eruption of a volcano beneath Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull has resulted in dangerous amounts of volcanic ash in the sky, huge headaches for travelers, and, it should be stated, unexpected beauty. Flickr members have captured a slew of photos of the ash and the resulting chaos. The eruption caused a 3.7 mile high plume of ash, […]

Growing Number of Aircraft Near-Collisions

The growing number of aircraft near-misses in US skies is making civilian aviation authorities increasingly concerned and has prompted them to reexamine air traffic control procedures. “Over the last weeks there have been a number of instances where separation was lost between aircraft and in some cases there was a bit of a delay of […]
